REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. — To celebrate the grand opening of its new Beach Patrol and comfort station at the end of Baltimore Avenue, the City of Rehoboth Beach will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The event, which will include a ceremonial ringing of the opening bell and guided tours of the facility, will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 22.
Construction on the two-story building began in early 2024. The new facility will include a medical office, public restrooms and changing areas. The second floor serves as headquarters for the Rehoboth Beach Patrol and includes an upper deck with panoramic views of the boardwalk and beach to assist lifeguard operations.
The facility was designed by Davis, Bowen & Friedel to accommodate both the needs of the Beach Patrol and beach visitors.
“Completion of this building is a major accomplishment for the city and represents a needed improvement for our visitors and lifeguard staff,” City Manager Taylour Tedder said. “The Beach Patrol is an integral part of Rehoboth Beach, and this new building will serve them, as well as many of our visitors, for years to come.”
It's a project that did go over budget, originally expected to cost $4.9 million; the final construction cost was $5,449,770. "Hard soil" caused delays in the building process and added to the final number.
