The city of Lewes calls for people to clean personal beach items off beaches

LEWES, Del. - The city of Lewes is calling for people to come get their beach equipment off the beach.

There is still a lot of beach equipment on the dunes crossings and dunes along the beaches in Lewes like kayaks and beach chairs.

The city sent out notices making people aware that they had until October 16 to remove their beach equipment.

The city said people leave the items on the beach during the season when they use them frequently but now they need to be claimed.

Some in Lewes like Jack Tyson said the beach needs to be taken care of and people need to be responsible for their own property.

"If people are leaving abandoned boats on the beach that's irresponsible, even an abandoned cup is a lack of responsibility," Tyson said. "We're all responsible for the beauty of our environment and so I say we should think globally and act locally, when you see trash pick it up, everyone can make this problem better."

The city of Lewes Maintenance Department will be holding onto the beach items at their headquarters and if they are not claimed by October 31, the items will be thrown away.
